This is the second stuff that I review from Aura Mystique label, after a French black metal band called “Crystalium”. This time, it’s “Malleus Maleficarum” and it’s a French band again. With “Nothing left to fight for” they chose a mix of black metal with doom heavy parts. Thus it makes the whole as powerful as melodic. This opus recorded between 25 and 31 December 2005 with adds in March and June 2006. Except a martial introduction that is worked out, all compositions do not draw the opus out because the whole is very usual for that kind of music. But it is pleasant and bewitching sometimes by the use of practised melodies on powerful and hammered rhythmics, even with acoustic parts. Moreover, melancholy parts contrast and therefore make the opus varied enough. It is very slow sometimes, ambient and painful such as sadness and despondency are. Thus, “Malleus Maleficarum” art is very tormented without turning into a corner-stone. So, a good stuff without being excellent. The mix and mastering are faultless and all track are yet quite good played enough to make an opinion. But it is neither more nor less than a good stuff without becoming essential because originality is not suitable there even with electronic and industrial parts insertion.

First of all, I wish you would not confound the band called “Killers” with “The Killers” or Paul Di’Anno’s “Killers” band. This first comment is only for you who don’t know the French band called “Killers” which plays for many years. The band was appreciated in France with their first opus called “Le fils de la haine” and still goes on its way with its new opus called “A l’ombre des vautours”, out in 2007. Listen! Sixteen cd releases since 1985 of which three live stuffs! Moreover, a dvd is available. Discover or rediscover them on stage and on backstage with their “1999-2004” dvd. It is essential in my opinion and get all details with their contact below. Now it’s time to talk about the Killers’s stuff that I chose to review: “Paris Metal France Festival 2008”. The gig recorded at La Locomotive in Paris during the “Paris Metal France Festival” (13th January, 2008) and out on Brennus records. By the way, feel free to read the review about this gig in our “Live reports” heading. I remember that great French metal bands played with Killers this day of which ADX, Blaspheme, Witches, (Still) Square and Royal Bubble Orchestra. Thus, this audio opus gives evidence of what Killers is on stage: powerful, warm and efficient. The band is practised and gives us a good time from start to end. All tracks accelerated enthusiastically during 51:08 minutes and taken from the first days of the band down to their last releases. The show begins with “Le côté sombre”, taken from the “Habemus Metal” opus (2002). It sets the fashion: “Nous sommes les seuls à rester debout…”. Then, back in time with “Le fils de la haine”: “Espoir légitime de vivre sans regrets…”, next “Délire de mort”: “Pour moi la mort n’est pas une fin…”, also “L’assassin”: “Je suis la mort, je suis le plus fort…”, without forgeting “Rosalind”: “Elle était ma vie, ma seule fille…”. Therefore, Killers does not miss an occasion to remind us of their past releases before to go on with new songs such as “Tais-toi” and “Deux bastos dans le cigare” taken from “A l’ombre des Vautours” (2007). French lyrics are the key-word with Bruno (vocals & guitars), even with Manowar and Motörhead covers renamed “Habemus Metal” and “On veut Killers” (Overkillers). “And if you still ask for what kind of music Killers does play, I should say: heavy “speed” metal, heavy thrash or maybe heavy metal, simply and nothing else, I don’t know…so, make your choice! All I know is that I cannot do without their musical art because they know how to share emotions and feelings with an asserted identity…still on stage !!! So, it is still a pleasure that never grows stale. I would end this review by thanks for the production. That’s sure enough a good point because the sound is faultless in my opinion: a real live record to tell the truth and not a usual bootleg worse than mediocre. Essential ! No less, no more! Bruno D. (vocals & guitars), Patrick O. (bass), Thierry A. (guitars & backing vocals) and Florent P. (drums) give up their lifes to metal with a great feeling. They all are worth listening with Killers accordingly. So, listen to Killers “Paris metal France festival 2008” without moderation, it goes without saying.

TAT comes back with a new opus called “Le sperme de tous les métaux” after its first release called “Quinta Essentia”. This time TAT chose Urgence Disk Records instead of “Creative Commons licence” but it is the same feeling there, like a sequel. Thus, the opus has feelings of sadness, pain, melancholy, despondency and also torments about it and it is explained with lyrics from Hermès, Thot, Baudelaire and also Unicornis. The whole is still intensified by acoustic guitars with baroque influences mixed with industrial or electronic parts sometimes. By the way, feel free to read the “Quinta Essentia” review to understand that TAT incontestably created its identity. Its music is very introverted and emotional. But this time the artist chose a remix of “Thalidomide” (played by Atopic) to end the opus. It was not essential in my opinion. Moreover, it contrasts too much with the whole. So, what on earth is it doing here ? Another version of “Thalidomide” is available too: “Absolution” and this time it reminds of Thalidomide “Reminiscence” played on “Quinta Essentia”. I’m ok with the Thalidomide acoustic version but at the same time it makes the end of the opus very repetitive and that’s why I marked “3/5” instead of “5/5”. Too bad because the rest of the opus is very bewitching with tracks such as “Unicornis”, “Putrefaction”, “O TAT” and “Subtiliation”. Esclarmonde’s female voice still accompany herself on the acoustic guitar parts with a great feeling and other voices complete this structure: Vx “Cheerleader”, Kader and Mic. Thus, “Le sperme de tous les métaux” remains faithful to « Quinta Essentia » on the whole and it is worth listening even if the end is not a success.

Tenabrarum Infanteus took form in 2004. They’re french and come from Paris. Theirs first EP “Addiction” asserts their electro-goth-metal influences. The EP opens with “Temoin Funeste”, probably the most outstanding song (and my favorite one) where distorted guitars are entwinned with strong subtle keylines. The clean female voice and the grim male voice give a great diversity. “Allegeance” has more black metal influences, blending experimental keylines and brutal guitar riffs. The predominant male voice give all his power to the song. “Chrirurgie” begins with the sound of a heart machine, precisely when the heart is starting to fail. We are entering in death. In “Symbiose”, lyrics and keylines, more gentle, gives an impression of coldness and strength, underlining our soul has no more boundaries. And this ends with “qu’adviendrons nous” with melodic and subtle synthlines, relentless strong guitars and dark vocals, with an equilibrium resting between harmony and disharmony. Despite its diversity, this EP retains a thematic coherency throughout and describes a progression from the life to death. Admittedly, Tenebrarum Infanteus has delivered a very amazing and interesting debut.

Welcome to human darkness with Unhealthy Dreams: five tracks that glorify dark electro industrial and black experimental music. It is such as a dark fairy tale about human’s decay and mankind’s torments. This opus called “Doloris Corpus” and it is the third release of the band after “Vatican Armageddon” demo (1999) and “Nightmares give way to Apocalypse” cd (2003). Everything is ok to form an opinion about this stuff: music parts as production and mastering. The whole is polished and came off. A self release is still a delicate piece of work and Unhealthy Dreams turn the test into a success. But at the same time they could do much more with a better professional recording. It is true that “Doloris Corpus” could sound more powerfully than it is there even if it is already satisfying. Thus, you can hope for a excellent release with their next recording. Therefore, “Doloris Corpus” is such as a step before a master-work. The compositions are various enough and ingenious in this way to make the whole very attractive. If you are used to black metal and electro-indus music, you will be very likely to enjoy this opus. I found nothing bad in this musical work. So, I hope that Unhealthy Dreams will be able to convince with a full length opus in future.
