demo (2004, Guerilla Underground, Yannick Donnet, Frédéric
Bailly, CD-R) by HssH. 10 tracks of intelligent cut and paste
mixed with inventive dark electronics parts. No vocals there and
a lot of experimental influences. Absent is the project of Yannick
Donet who plays with Untel too. Untel is an electro-rock band
but Absent is different. Yannick explores different subjects with
Absent such as solitude, madness, time, schizophrenia and celebrity.
He uses a lot of samples to make the whole. His music is minimal
but not too much because he mixes quite sounds with oppressive
and impressive rythms. A lot of keyboards mixed with electronic
drums and noise samples in this opus. That's we have to say about
the Absent musical creation. I add it's very dark and unsound
sometimes and it sounds like music that Clive Barker, John Carpenter
or David Lynch could use for movies. Then Frédéric
Bailly does the final arrangements and mixs that Absent need.
Franck Freedman join them to built an visual identity and so,
he achieves the cover. And what about concept of Absent ? Well,
wrong meets rights there. Human meets machine. You will feel better
then ! I loved it ! And about the meaning of Absent : 1. Qui n'est
pas présent quelque part. 2. Qui manque. 3. Distrait. 4.
Musique électronique minimaliste basée sur les sons,
le sampling, les sentiments et le réel. [Dixit Absent].

great surprise with this stuff which contains two different cds
of Absent experimentations. The first cd contains 50 minutes of
remix by Absent, Cypher and Frag and the second cd is a live capture
recorded at La Laiterie (Strasbourg – France) during the
2005 year. So, it is not a new Absent’s opus really but
it is coming such as a sequel of Guerilla Underground work. It’s
the will to create a new structure linked to the electronic stage
where Absent could play a prominent part, of course. This structure
was born : AB.1oo. So, let’s talk about it : the birth of
musical meetings with different artists.
The first cd offers a lot of remix of the Absent’s demo
out in 2004. There are bands done by Yannick Donet and it is used
for a Faust drama play. The stage-manager of this play is Cyril
Lallement (Ras). Also there is a remix done by Frag too. Jérôme
Berthelot played with this band and created a side-project with
Kabutogani which is a dark electro music with drum&bass and
noisy influences.
The whole of the cd is something such as a dark electronic music
with ambient and atmospheric parts that I never heard before in
that way. Don’t ask for lyrics because there are quite absent
of this stuff except samples and gothic parts on the ninth track
or black metal indus vocals parts on the tenth track. The music
is minimalist sometimes. But it becomes often complex, cerebral
and emotional. A high sound quality and a music which is very
varied. You will never loose your time with this opus. Emotional
parts will carrie you away. Tormented experimental parts will
take you away from the living and you will be trapped by the ins
and outs of the Unconscious : “S’il pénêtre
votre chair, alors il ouvrira les portes de l’enfer !”
Don’t play with the Devil ! Don’t’ plead in
favour of him but ask for this stuff quickly if you’re looking
for new musical experimentations into electronic music univers.
“S’il pénètre votre chair…inerte.”
You will not remain dull after listening this jewel.
The second cd is a bomb of a live recording in France at La Laiterie
(Strasbourg, 03.10.05). The approach is more brutal and industrial
than the studio recording session. It becomes very noisy sometimes
with its hammered parts. Muckrackers could play with this kind
of musical feeling of course but Absent’s music is identifiable
without doubt because of their ambient and emotional parts. I
was looking out for hearing the public but nothing at all ! Where
is the public ? What did they do that night ? Did they sleep ?
I can’t explain what Absent did with the microphones for
the live recording. It looks like a house with a movie showed
on the screen where nobody react. But the musical variations and
feelings of Absent bring a new dimension at every moment in any
case. Thus, this live recording enlarges their music. Their approach
is more psychedelic sometimes than their studio session and they
still play a pure electronic music : Don’t expect for musicians
on stage such as a real percussionist, bass or guitar player.
Everything comes from different programmed musical sessions.
This second cd put the finishing touch to the whole with a cd-rom
track where you will find photos that illustrate Absent’s
univers. Also there is a video projected at la Laiterie during
the same live session date. It is done by Sylvain Weber. More
than thirty minutes of weird “cut and paste…and replay”
pictures mixed with odd personal movie parts. It begins in a shower,
it goes on with a well, then it leads you outside, then…you’ll
be back to the shower ! But this movie doesn’t clear your
head. It oppresses your brain for a better pleasure ! Be careful
because Sylvain use replay mode with abuse with this video. So,
you could be disappointed. But you maybe will understand his step
if you agree with the old short footages of Peter Greenaway, in
the beginning of his artwork.
Obviously, Absent and aB.1oo have a future with this kind of stuffs.

: Decline of Human Condition (4 tracks / Absurdity) CD-R 2004.
It
begins by an oppressive rythmic ambient introduction that invite
you to the decline of human condition. Then follow three tracks
of an original brutal death metal mixed with real accoustic percussions.
This mixture brings tribal and oriental influences to the whole
and make it original. Sepultura did it on Roots, bloody roots
and the music of Absurdity reminds Chaos AD or Nailbomb especially
with guitars riffs sometimes. Nevertheless, this band from France
is quite different from Max Cavalera projects because you never
forget their brutal death influences. I'm just desappointed with
the 11 minutes of this cd. Too short for an excellent stuff !
Come back with a full lenght opus next time men !

You
understand the Italian? It is advised to know of what speaks "Aquefrigide"
modern metal hardware-core band with a back taste of NIRVANA.
"a caso isolato" is an album of 15 titles for 57 minutes
too long for a very repetitive style. we have the impression that
the band is repeated or that I does not try to diversify its style.
The lyrics do not change much and the rhythmic ones take again
the same the same kind of riff on each titles of the album . The
fact of having chosen to sing in their language is honourable
and it brings only touches originality which unfortunately will
probably have its reverse of medal. Public universal will not
understand the topics approached by the group. To speak about
the music in itself, the compositions are aggressive as want to
be the style hard core, accompanied by skinned voices (like Curt
kobain) and saturated to give an effect of violence with some
parts in clear voice.
Damage for the unit because of the album we cannot say that "Aquefrigide"
are poor musicians but rather musicians who cannot translate their
emotions into music. Personally, I was bored with the listening
of this album which I would not advise with the follower of true
music metal but more with one public beginner at the broad spirit
or fan of nirvana.

Amphitryon
is the host who invites someone to dinner. With “Sumphokeras”,
the dinner composed of doom and heavy metal elements mixed with
death metal and soprano vocals. Based on old Mesopotamian or African
civilizations, flirting with their sacred feelings, they chose
the way of Septic Flesh and of My Dying Bride with addition of
orchestral Classical vocals. Thus, they lead you into a strange
dark mystic dream with an original step. All parts are efficient
and diversified enough to make the whole very attractive and bewitching.
Don’t expect a lot of soli with the guitars and no speed
metal or thrashy rhythms any longer because it’s not what
they chose to do at all. But remember you to abyssal rhythms of
bands such as Septic Flesh or Candlemass and you will understand
the trend of “Sumphokeras”. Add Tibetan, also canto
and epics singing influences and listen to their bizarre birth.
You will be not disappointed with Amphitryon because everything
is quite arranged and the production is faultless. Nevertheless,
maybe a shading with the use of death metal vocals. Too much monotonous
in my opinion. But if you like the use of Septic Flesh’s
death vocals, it will be not a drawback to your listening. So,
a good stuff from the Thundering Records - Manitou Music label
again.

plays an hybrid music. This is called "metal/emo/indus"
by the author. All tracks are different from each other. This
is a mix of industrial, atmospherik, metal and gothik musik. Sometimes
it's powerful, sometimes Anaël play excellent melodies full
of sadness, melancholy and darkness. There is a lot of samples
and piano or keybords to intensify the whole which is definitively
tormented and depressive. Screams alternate with languids vokals.
Samples mix guitars sound like a factory where there's nobody
left but evil, despair and fear. No joy at all ! You find a Burzum
kover baptized "When night falls..." to end this sickness
and you have to listen to all the tracks again and again to understand
what prevailing atmosphere, feeling, becomme apparent. When you
want to end with this world, this is for you ! Eh,eh... (I don't
invite you to it, of course !!!) Well, before to close, I have
to add that Anaël plays a different and personal music above
all with a lot of emotions. With this quite sound recording, I'm
already waiting for the next release

/ Dieu...dévastateur / Intro + 4 tracks / (Cocyte/Anubis/Starthell/Vicomte
de Neurasthenie) 2002. Self Released. CD-R (demo). We're
going into the past of Ancetres there bekause the band known a
lot of modifikations with the line up until now. After an introduktion
with Ancetres lyriks on a musik taken from a great komposer this
opus open with an old skool melodik black metal. Ancetres is the
third band of Vicomte de Neurasthenie (vokals) who played in Visions
de l'Ame (r.i.p.) and who joined Spectrums of Oblivion now. The
sound of this demo from France is raw and I think that it is not
the best they did. It kould be more powerful with another rekording.
But dark melodies are there and sometimes it sound very heavy
and good enough. All is o.k. with their musikal koncept but I
don't know what they'll do in future with new musicians. I hope
the best for their next release bekause it's not too bad at all.

: In destruction (Anorma 2004) cd. Thrashcore-indus
from France. This material contains 10 tracks of strong hate on
cold and dark tonalities. Imagine a mix of Meshugah, Fear Factory
and Neurosis. That’s what Anorma is Very powerful with a
high sound quality. They began to play in 1998 but they found
their identity since 2000. Anorma is not very original but efficacious.
So, feel free to listen to this kind of music when you like it.
You will be not disappointed. Anorma are ex-Attentat, Distress,
War-torn, Absurdity and ex-Distress members. Be sure you will
find sonic industry against mental rust with them.

second opus of the band. Still great ! The "anihilation of
christianism" bring us true raw black metal influences like
they did on "Demain sera le chaos" demo and they sometimes
plays here with more black melodies in the same vein of Celestia
(France). Brutal, majestically sad and dark. I only long for not
listening bass player. But this is not too essential. Daalberith
and Dagons do the rest with Nisroch and they do it well. This
is "true satanik black metal" and they know how to give
us their message.

Antaeus / Aosoth : Wrath of the Evangelikum (Satanik Gospel May
2001) / Within the Angles of the Path of the left. Antaeus : 4
tracks / Aosoth : 3 tracks (Antaeus : Storm/Set/Thorgon/Sagoth/MkM
/ Aosoth : hmm...who are they really, you know that ?)This is
the new opus released with Paleur Mortelle Prod. Antaeus plays
4 tracks taken from the gibus fest in May 2001. So, these are
old tracks you can find on "Cut your flesh and worship satan"
but with different versions anyway. Here is the list : "Inner
War", "Seventh Ceremony" and "Devotee".
The second track "Blood War III" added to this live
madness. This is the best live recording I have ever listened
to this french black metal band. When you still don't know what
kind of band it is I have to add that Antaeus plays brutal black
metal without kompromise. They signed for their second opus with
Osmose Productions (fr.) and their earlier produktion was out
under the Baphomet's Records banner (us). This live stuff kill
really !Aosoth tracks are different. Not live tracks this time
but studio recording. Aosoth plays typikal old black metal as
Gorgoroth or Darkthrone. Don't expect something different. Quite
sound recording ! All tracks kill your black souls with powerful
and dark sickness sound. Tracks list : "Black Prince...",
"The Bond of the Nine Angles" and "Winds of the
Abyss". I didn't know this band before and I can say you
have to listen to this when you are nto underground or "true"
black metal attitude. Nothing new musikally but very pleasant
! This split opus is limited to 350 items only and I enjoyed to
get some.

Innovation
or reproduction, Art or Artisan class, the French musicians of
Ashura chose the second way: 14 tracks of old school thrash metal
mixed with screams, death vocals and melodic background vocals
judging by appearances. But two short and interesting acoustic
tracks called “Funeral of the desert” and “The
dark choice” contrast with a female voice on “The
dark choice”. Also they add a lot of death metal and US
thrash hardcore influences inside too. Thus, Slayer, Testament,
Exodus, Entombed, Edge of Sanity, Anthrax, Sick of It All, Sadus
and a lot of others bands run over this opus. You will much to
be thankful for “Legacy of hatred” if you enjoy this
kind of mix because it makes the whole varied enough. Moreover,
it’s quite good enough played with a correct production.
Ashura’s music convinces its listener: powerful, brutal
or melodic, dark or atmospheric, all parts come with excellent
compositions and perfect arrangements or adaptations.
This is the second release of the band after “At the dawn
of your deterioration” (Manitou, 2005). They played with
Vital Remains, Entombed, Dismember since the beginning and with
Massacre in 2007. Also take due note of the bonus track video
called “Eye of the D.r.e.a.d” inside that enlarges
Ashura’s professionalism. I come to the conclusion that
“Legacy of hatred” is a good French release because
the musicians took their time to offer a succeed work even if
their influences are yet detectable easily.

Productions The Real Underground vol 3. 20 tracks from bands of
the South of France. The Autumn Productions promote different
kind of music of underground bands from Midi Pyrénées
country. On this third opus of the association you find metal,
gothic, indutrial, rap, noisy, trip-hop, hard-core and others
musics. The bands are : Punish Yourself, Rastapopoulos, Leiden,
Floid, J.F.Sekail, 2 Fast 4 U, Syndromes, Grimoria, Rigor, Psychicold,
Iraven, Haella Tenia, Seaside, Sidilarsen, Mdern Funeral Art,
Dark Factory, Apoca Luptein, Power Skunk, Agora Fidelio, Trendkiller.

Another
French band signed with the French “Manitou Music”
label and it’s another symphonic metal band among hundred
symphonic metal bands. You could be sick of it because Nightwish
and Rhapsody already played it in the past. But Auspex comes from
Grenoble’s district and made something different: Elodie,
who is Auspex’s singer from start to end, do not use typical
lyrical vocals with too much background vocals to convince you.
Her singing is over and over very sensual with a lot of variations.
She knows how to make use influences from Classic repertory to
Cabaret singing without loose her identity. Thus Auspex is such
as a mix of Nightwish, Kamelot, Lita Ford and Angizia because
all instruments intensify Elodie’s interpretation. Everything
is quite good played enough with a high musical level and the
production of this opus is faultless once more…once more
for Manitou Music: a success ! Electro parts and many different
feelings added to the whole without destroy its unity. These variations
on the contrary underline the marrow of “Resolutio”.
Open mind required ! Also “Resolutio” is the first
release of the band after their “Mysteries of the stars”
mcd. At last, Brett Caldas-Lima (Kalisia, Malmonde, Freak Kitchen)
produced the opus at the “Towersound’ studio. So,
don’t miss the Auspex train !!!

: Neverending Warlust / 8 tracks (Necro/Lord.S./Donn/Infest) The
first professionnal material of this french black metal band under
the Taran Productions flag. The sound is a little different with
their cd-r opus. But their fight and their hate is still the same.
The songs are interesting but not original. Fast, raw, brutal,
satanik, pagan, celtic : an ode to the ancients (You know what
I mean by !) ! The sound is quite except with the vokals. It's
too back of the whole sometimes.I add they have no real drummer
but machines. Their music could be better with it. But this is
not too essential. I enjoy this opus because they have good ideas
with the guitars which remind old Destruction (Ger.) melodies.
I said they are not original and I think that they don't want
to be. So, i recommend you this opus when you believe into "true
old black metal". Not for the others !

Their cd-r before "Neverending Warlust" opus. They say
they play primitive black metal. Well, this is not as primitive
as they say. This is a typical ug black metal material demonstration
with an underground sound with strong early 90's b.m. influences.
For those who listen to early Emperor, Darkthrone, Gorgoroth,
Enslaved, Graveland or Dark Funeral for example.

skool metal !!! But what kind of metal kould you imagine from
this french band ? Well, different influences on this cd : Cryptic
Slaughter as well as Macabre and Cannibal Corpse. Imagine a mix
of these old bands and you will approach the Atrocious Devoured
musik. Old skool thrash metal sometimes, especially with the rythmik
and lead guitars. More hard kore, fast and brutal sometimes too.
Their artwork is typikal artwork that I found in the 80' years
for a lot of hard kore metal bands kovers : a funny gore pikture
for a brutal musik. Effikacious ? Well, you will be the one to
judge. I have to add that this self released is very professionnal
bekause the band recorded it with a high sound quality and they
wrote into the book that five percent of all benefits on sale
will be offered as food for children and a helping hand for the
more threaten among us. Do you will buy it for it or for their
musik ? Find your way ! This opus has good parts anyway even if
it is not too much new musikally I think.

CD-R. 2003. Autoproduction. Death metal band from France with
brutal and technical parts. It reminds the last Death releases
a lot but with more brutal death influences. So, this band offer
an high musical level and that's a good point because the production
is quite good enough. A lot of varations in the tracks make the
whole not boring at all. Please, note that all lyriks are in french
language, even if it's difficult to understand what the singer
screams really. Also, thrash influences such as Sadus did it in
the past. A good stuff really !

death trash Assault of the the elitism kanadian warriors ! That's
what I can say with this brutal metal opus. The A.O.A. musik is
influenced by bands like Morbid Angel, Kreator, or Carcass . Remember
the "Altar of Madness", "Pleasure to Kill"
and "Symphonies of Sickness" albums. Add they play faster
with a black metal sound and you'll understand what I'm talking
about. Also, they play more melodies with multifarious heavy,
thrash or doom metal breaks and they know how to mix brutallity
and melodies with fast black or grind metal rythms and vokals.
Strike is a concept album about war and humanity destruction.
They just have signed with Osmose Productions for a new release
and the concept is still the same. When you listen to Antaeus,
Impiety, Korum or old brutal thrash metal bands, you could enjoy
with Axis of Advance. The sound production is quite and the music
is efficacious. No short pause !
