Diahableries already reviewed Bak XIII with the “Dark Life & Interstice sampler 2005” which was out under the Urgence Disk Records banner. You read this review in all likehood here. So, let’s talk about their full length opus now after listening their excellent “Fuck you and Dance” taken from the Urgence Disk sampler.
This opus is not a new stuff really because “Post Lucem Tenebrae” gives the pitch with different mix and remix. The whole looks like a mix of Hoccico, Tactikal Sect and Wumpscut with robots voices. It is influenced with dark sounds taken from the eighteen years and so it rounds off the tone. Bak XIII take you away into their dance floor univers. Their music is recommended to all people who usually frequent gothic dance floor evenings and it is for all lovers of catchy dark electronic melodies. “Dance and die”, “Homodisco”, then “Fuck you and Dance” give the tone in that way. Welcome to the heart of the matter immediately with the first track. Quickly different from Suicide Commando because it is less oppressive. Bak XIII sounds possess your mind and plunge it into a bizarre dream. Further ambient, atmospheric and sensual parts. It reminds of Psycho Bitch sometimes.
I said there are a lot of mix and remix on this stuff : “Lost in Darkness” for instance which brings ambient variations with the “Hiv remix”, “Spies remix” and the “Idlo remix”. You will fall deeper into darkness with these mix. You will leave your thoughts and your nightmare will begin. Other mix such as “Guitar mix” gives an industrial feeling to the track. Also, “Dance and die” will be performed with the “Autodafe remix” again . More aggressive than the original track, this mix brings a teck feeling to the track composition. A success that you should enjoy ! At last, the opus ends with a dance floor touch because they chose the excellent “Fuck you and dance” track.
Thus, this material is a perfect production with a minimalist lay-out that fend for itself and it comes with a cd-rom part with the “Homodisco” track. This video track reminds of Kmfdm with the use of pictures. But it is more refined and repetitive such as a lobotomy of your brain. It is very disturbing in my opinon but you will judge by yourself, of course. Obviously, this stuff will come again and again on my cd player for certain.
So, Bak XIII offer a lot of variations for their tracks. They know what diversity means. Thus, they are a new breath for the electronic music because they clearly found an original musical identity without revolutionizing this univers.

Band: Black Dementia
Title: Dictum of Negation

Another release from the French Aura Mystique label. “Dictum of Negation” has many good qualities because Black Dementia know how to mix black metal with thrash metal influences without turning into a usual and boring stuff. Thus, this opus is as bewitching as powerful and varied enough too even if it does not avoid black metal stock phrases such as “666 extolled” or “See the signs of decline”, also “Death is the sentence that I give to this dull decaying world”. Therefore, lyrics of “Dictum of Negation” are not very creative in my opinion contrary to its music which is fine and strengthed by hammered rhythms mixed with strong melodies. It makes the whole coherent and attractive. Moreover faultless production and professional mastering enhance the whole. At last, the opus ends with a song originally performed by Profane and it is called “Le chemin des ténèbres”. Thus, I recommend this stuff to all of you metal addicts when you’re able to listen to a new powerful band with an asserted identity. Black Dementia comes from France and its is much talked about.

Band: Blackness
Title: Dawn of the New Sun
Material: cd
Label: Manitou Music

Another band from France playing old school thrash metal. Thus, Blackness is a mix of old Exodus, Testament, Metallica, Megadeth and other bands in that way: Eighty years survival even if vocals use death metal repertory. A new typical thrash metal opus that seems coming from the past. The production is ok because LB Lab knows his work (Boost, Loudblast, Hertz and Silence, Kragens, Aeons, Broken Edge,…). Also “Dawn of the New Sun” is the second release of the band. Covers of famous bands such as “Ace of Spades” added to this stuff to show us their references. This out is an extended version with 3 bonus tracks coming from the “2000 Crush LP”. All songs played enough to make the whole professional but instead of being attractive, it’s acceptable only: typical thrash metal songs. No less, no more !
Maybe I listened to too many bands in that way since 25 years and that’s why I’m disappointed now when I listen to another typical band ! But it could be a good idea to buy this record to discover what old school thrash metal means. I know what it means…too much !…and you ?

« Storm and brilliance » is the first output by a young spanish band called Bloodoline. This band was totally unknown to me and possibly to most of you before this album appears on Panik Terror Musik (distributed by Plastic Head), which is probably the label created by the Bloodoline guys, since they are from Madrid as well. Bloodoline plays varied black metal with prominent, sometimes hysterical vocals. « Storm and brilliance » is built on an alternation between 6 real black metal songs and atmospheric interludes. When listening to the first song « Warlike spirit » and its fast rhythm, you think this is another insignificant brutal black metal band but when « Unity to oneness » comes in, you discover a talented band with a sense of identity. The musical structures are studied, the vocals are good, especially on that track and the melodies are rather efficient. The interludes between the tracks are quite surprising sometimes, for example « Triumph of death I » is medieval-like, contrasting a lot with the electric material. There are really some good ideas on this record and you can count on Bloodoline for the future, that’s for sure. However, this kind of music requires a better production than this one, it is not bad, not at all, but it ‘s too flat. I also tend to think that even if there are good elements, Bloodoline does not manage to maintain an overwhelming quality on a full-length album….yet. In my opinion, « Storm and brilliance » contains two standout tracks with « Unity to oneness » and the last one « Nihil storm ». With more experience and of course work, Bloodoline will manage to create a masterpiece album for sure, there’s a big potential in this Spanish duo. For the time being, « Storm and brilliance » is a well-balanced first outburst of rage, madness and blackness that I have to recommend to the ones who like original creations since it’s quite hard for me to compare them with something else right now. Check out for the forthcoming split cd on Pain Terror Musik with Blut Aus Nord, Reverence, Karras and Bloodoline.

Bloody Sign is an french band of the death metal scene. They come to us with “Van Vigala Loits” this time. A professional package for a brutal and technical music. Bloody Sign  begin a dark march  with “Possessed by the Ancient Earth”, a track with melodic parts and blast rythmics. It remembers us kindly to the good time of “Dissection” with a great pleasure. It is an insane mix  of solo and crazy  rythmics without stop. The Bloody Sign hordes go on their work with the “Vigala Loits”, the eponym track of the opus title. This track set itself apart from the other songs because of an insane vision and cold feelings. It’s my favourite song on this opus. It is one of the best death metal bands in all likelihood. I mean old great death metal bands. Bloody Sign found its identity because everything remain different with various influences there. Thus, it’s a great composition of musical violence with many good points.
This opus end with a track played on stage at “La Laiterie” (Strasbourg – France). It reminds of the Scandinavian’s death metal. It’s called “Master of Nothing” and it comes as a bonus track. This live track proves that Bloody Sign master its art with perfection.

Bloody Sign : Primitive Horde / 5 tracks (Kalevi/Fred/Nathaniel/Ilmar). 2001 Bloody Sign is a french brutal band which plays a mix between brutal death and black metal. Never boring, they give us a lot of breaks in their musik, very (very !!!) short guitars melodies but agressive guitars enough, fast (or not !) rythmics, death or black vokals for a total khaos approaching 18 minutes. The sound production is not too bad at all. I really enjoyed with this opus. I forgot, you will find an particular track on the cd...experimental for this kind of musik.

Bloody sign begin with a thrashy and savage riff but intelligible vocals. The style is enough technic, with some old-school solos. The tracks are various and not linear.I think we can feel the influence of Metallica, with a more black-thrashy approach. Rademassaker :All is said in these words. We have here a deadly sound with guttural voice making aggression by moment. For a split demo, the sound is really good. The pace is quite speedful but the last track is more slow and heavy with an atmosphere leading you on the path to revenge and murder.

Pagan’s friends, this cd is for you. Divided between a metal universe and folk music world, mixed with different wind instrument as flute, Borknagar travels us to a world where paganism rebirth more contemporary. The whole stuff is loyal to a Celtic impression. It’s a great album. The song writing is very ambitious and well worked. We can insist on the musical quality of this band whom captivate the audience with a music style. A great success.

Byatis / In Dark Abyss of Memory / 8 tracks / 2003. CD (pro) This opus is a self released distributed by Skull Fucked Prods. Skull Fucked supports the deepest undergroung brutal scene only and that's what it is with this stuff. Brutal death metal !!! Excellent sound rekording and teknikal instrumental parts. A lot of good ideas, breaks, rythmik variations, lead guitars and powerful bakking vokals (or I should say sekond vokals ?) added to typikal death metal vokals. This is not new musikally but pleasant to listen to. If you like tracks with a lot of variations inside with old skool thrash and death metal influences, it's for you in that kase ! And there is melodies sometimes but be kareful bekause it's never as long as you kould imagine it. This stuff is not as quite as Dark Tranquillity new tracks or as new Tiamat releases but very intense, violent, oppressive and brutal...without respite ! A success !
